Carolina Gold Rush!
On the hunt for gold? Look no further, Reed's Gold Mine is the perfect place to go! Explore the first discovery place of gold in America at this legendary mine located in the heart of Cabarrus County. Reed's Gold Mine began operations in 1799 when his 12 year old son, Conrad, saw a large shinny rock in the creek and lugged it back home. This 17 pound rock was later sold to a jeweler in Fayettville for $3.50, or a week wages in 1803. Reed, learning of the large rock's true value, began a methodical search for gold in the hills of Cabarrus County. Reed made a large return on his surface finds and began a mine, sparking the Carolina Gold rush in 1804. Today the mine still stands, and is an institution of learning, teaching every visitor how gold would have been mined in the 19th and early 20th century.
In addition to its rich history, the mine serves the purpose today guiding tours of the mines and surrounding walking trails; both of which feature time period machinery, tools, and equipment. The mine even offers guests a chance to pan for gold in the rich creek mud where you might even find a nugget of gold! The area is also equipped with a full museum showcasing the major events that have happened at the location since 1799.
