It is interesting to note that Jackson County is one of the only counties in North Carolina to have nearly 4 times the number of townships than actual towns. Not to mention, it is in Jackson County that the last shot of the Civil War west of the Mississippi was fired in a small confederate skirmish with Federal Soldiers.
