Outside of Seymour Johnson, the county is also known for the charming town of Goldsboro, North Carolina. Though its population has dropped in the past 10 years, the town is still home to over 35,000 residents and over 19,000 housing units. The demographics of the town make it unique as well as it is 53% African American and approximately 42% White. By far the most notable occurrence within Wayne county was the accident that resulted in two hydrogen bombs being dropped near the village of Fargo in 1961. When a bomber carrying the bombs suffered a critical failure in its mechanics systems, the crew was forced to ditch the plane, and the bombs went through a number of their arming stage on the way to the ground. Luckily, one last low-voltage safety mechanism managed to stop the bomb from arming completely, as many other safety measures failed.
Near catastrophic events aside, Wayne county has become a model southern county to live in, with warm southern hospitality and great food around every corner.
