Situated between Mooresville and Statesville in Iredell County, Troutman is on the quieter, less developed, northern end of Lake Norman. It’s peaceful, rural charm, scenic lakefront communities, and easy proximity to major thoroughfares such as I-77 and I-40 make it a desirable location for families and newcomers. Many new homes for sale in Troutman NC are available. About 2,100 people live in Troutman, although that number is expected to grow steadily as more people move to the area and discover this lovely town.
Immigrants from Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Maryland first arrived in what would become Troutman in the 1750s and soon created a small but bustling farming community. John Jacob Troutman was one of the early settlers, and he became one of the area’s biggest landowners, acquiring nearly 2,000 acres. He and his wife, Margaret Fesperman, had eight children together, followed by nearly as many grandchildren, who went on to forge some of the area’s first businesses, including a wagon workshop.
Over the years, as the Troutman family’s business flourished, people began referring to the crossroads where the wagon shop was located as Troutman's, and the name has remained. In the mid-1800s, the advent of a new railroad system also helped the area grow and prosper. Today, just west of town, the Troutman Depot still stands a charming reminder of the area’s heritage.
Residents here enjoy a unique mix of attractions, most notably Lake Norman State Park, which boasts 13 scenic miles of the lake’s shoreline, including a 125-yard sandy beach area for public swimming. Moreover, the park also has its own 33-acre lake, ideal for fishing (crappie, bluegill and yellow perch are the most popular), as well as boating (pedal boats and canoes are available for rent).
Other park amenities include an extensive network of hiking and biking trails, including the 30-mile Itusi Trail, which winds through hardwood forests and provides a wonderful way to explore the area’s natural beauty.
Camping is also available at the 1,328-acre park, with more than 30 sites, all of which have tent pads, picnic tables and grills. Group tent camping sites are also available, which can accommodate up to 25 people, and include nearby restrooms, picnic tables and a fire ring.
In addition to Lake Norman State Park, the town is building the ESC Troutman Park near downtown. This 30-acre, Multi-phase Park will feature walking trails, athletic fields and a playground.
Another great attraction in Troutman is the Zootastic Park of Lake Norman, which has hundreds of exotic animals, including tigers, antelope, kangaroos, zebras, and more. There’s also a petting zoo, and education school and summer camp programs. While at the zoo, you can also explore Western Town, which is full of snakes, reptiles, tortoises, and raccoons, and then wander over to Safari Trail, where a zookeeper will guide you through a covered walk where you can get up close to some of the larger exotic animals.
Elsewhere in Troutman, you can take advantage of the town’s great lakeside location at Morningstar Marinas’ Skipper’s Landing, which has year-round wet and dry storage along with boat and Waverunner rentals. There’s also a clubhouse with picnic areas, grills, restaurants, fuel, and boating supplies. Morningstar Marinas also hosts regular social events, fishing tournaments, barbecues and boating safety classes.
