Surry County is considered part of the Piedmont Triad metropolitan area in North Carolina and is located in the Yadkin Valley area and the Appalachian Mountains region. The county was formed in 1771 from Rowan County and was named for the Surrey in England, the birthplace of William Tryon, Governor of North Carolina from 1765 to 1771.
