Huntersville incorporated in 1873 and was named for Robert Boston Hunter, a landowner and cotton farmer. The town grew in response to the railroad and a nearby cotton mill, and hasn’t stopped since.
Today it’s a vibrant city marked by eclectic housing options, pedestrian-friendly commercial developments, and a host of family-friendly activities, including Discovery Place KIDS. This wonderful children’s museum has educational programs and interactive exhibits in everything from science to the arts. Your kids will have a blast exploring this 23,000-square-foot facility, which is designed to help kids grow and develop physically, mentally and socially.
Gilead Road is Huntersville’s main commercial corridor, and here you’ll find numerous shopping centers with a full line-up of bars, restaurants, boutiques, and stores, including an Earth Fare, which offers a large selection of natural and organic foods. The 52-acre Birkdale Village is another thriving business and retail center, with a vibrant mix of shops, offices, restaurants and a movie theater. Just south of Huntersville is Northlake Mall, which is anchored by Belk, Dillard’s, Dick’s Sporting Goods and a 14-screen cinema megaplex, along with nearly 150 specialty shops.
Huntersville homes also takes advantage of its many natural resources with several scenic parks and nature preserves, making it an ideal place to settle down if you love the outdoors.
Spend the day with your family at the expansive Latta Plantation Nature Preserve, where you can go picnicking, fishing, hiking, and horseback riding. History buffs can take guided tours of the preserve’s scenic Historic Latta Plantation, a cotton plantation and farm built in the early 1800s. There’s also Historic Rural Farm in Huntersville, which is both a historic site and nature preserve. The scenic, 265-acre attraction hosts a number of fun annual events, including The Loch Norman Highland Games, which celebrates the area’s Scottish heritage, as well as the Amazing Maize Maze in the fall. And every summer Historic Rural Hill hosts the North Carolina Brewers and Music Festival, during which you can enjoy local and regional bands and sample of the best locally brewed beer around. There’s also the Lake Norman Beer Festival, which takes place every September at The Galway Hooker and features live music and craft beers from local, national, and international breweries.
The annual Carolina Renaissance Festival is another not-to-be missed event that takes place in Huntersville. Every fall thousands of people gather and enjoy this European-style art and entertainment festival, which features delicious food–be sure to try the giant turkey legs!–outdoor theater, circus entertainment, arts and crafts, and even a jousting tournament.
Elsewhere in Huntersville you’ll find the multifaceted North Mecklenburg Park. A great resource for active families, the park has baseball fields, basketball courts, tennis courts, soccer fields, and picnic areas, along with mountain biking and hiking trails. Huntersville Family Fitness and Aquatics is another wonderful resource, with an Olympic-sized pool, gymnasium, fitness center, group exercise studio, and outdoor splash park for children.
Of course one of Huntersville’s top amenities is the lake. A great way to take advantage of this beautiful natural resource is Blythe Landing, a 26-acre waterfront park with floating piers for launching boats, volleyball courts, a playground, beach area, picnic tables and café. Blythe Landing is also home to the North Carolina Community Sailing and Rowing Center, which offers instruction in sailing and rowing for youth and adults.
Finally, at the Energy Explorium at McGuire Nuclear Station, families can take a virtual tour of the nuclear station, play interactive games, and enjoy a scenic stroll or picnic along a mile-long lakeside trail. Throughout the year Energy Explorium also hosts Movies@McGuire, where friends and family gather on an expansive lakeside lawn and watch movies projected onto a giant screen.
With so many people moving to Huntersville, it’s no surprise business is booming. Some of the area’s major employers include Switzerland-based ABB Inc., which operates a $90 million high-voltage cable manufacturing facility at the Commerce Station business park. The plant supplies transmission cables that carry electric power and renewable energy.
Health care facilities are also alive and well in Huntersville. The 60-bed Presbyterian Hospital Huntersville on Gilead Road recently unveiled a $26 million, 15-bed expansion. The revamped 266,890-square-foot facility includes an emergency department, multiple operating rooms, a birthing center and dozens of other services.
Carolinas HealthCare System operates a freestanding emergency department in Huntersville off Hwy. 73. The 21,000-square-foot facility has nine treatment rooms and two observations beds. It also offers lab services and diagnostic imaging.
Carolinas HealthCare also operates a Huntersville Urgent Care facility near Gilead Road and I-77, which is equipped to treat minor illnesses and injuries.
