Fontana Lake is formed by the Fontana Dam which is the tallest dam in the eastern United States. Lake Santeetlah is the second lake in the county. Being yet another impoundment of the Little Tennessee River, Lake Santeetlah is located in the heart of the National Forest. Nearly 75% of the Lake is surrounded by national forests. The Appalachian Trail also winds through Graham County going around each lake. The Cheoah River is also located in Graham County, but because of the Cheoah Dam located just south of the Fontana Dam, only runs for 17 days per year creating class IV and V whitewater rapids.Graham County includes three towns, Lake Fontana, Lake Santeetlah, and Robbinsville, the location of the county seat and courthouse.
