Located on the quieter, less-developed west side of Lake Norman in rural Lincoln County, Denver is ideal for folks looking for a more laid-back lifestyle.

The history of the area pre-dates the Revolutionary War, when Denver was known by the rather unflattering name of “Dry Pond” because of a small pond along Highway 16 that would evaporate during the summer heat.

The first wave of Scots Irish and German settlers arrived here in the mid-1700s, including John Beatty, whose house eventually became the town’s first place of worship. Denver is noted for being the site of several significant Revolutionary War events, including the Battle of Cowan's Ford in 1781, which eventually led to the British Army’s surrender at Yorktown, Va.

It wasn’t until 1873 that Matt Thompson, a local school principal, renamed the town Denver, reportedly in the hopes that the more appealing moniker would help attract railroad service to the area. The tactic didn’t work, but the town kept the name and incorporated in 1877.

The lack of railroad service is one of the reasons Denver remained largely rural and undeveloped compared to other neighboring towns. That slowly started to change with the creation of Lake Norman in the early 1960s, as more people moved to the area, which helped spark development. Moreover, the fact that Lincoln County has lower taxes and land prices compared to other counties in the area also helped attract newcomers.

Nonetheless, Denver is still off the beaten path, although new growth is evident with projects like the expansion of N.C. 16. The highway not only provides easy access to Charlotte, but is also the site of new commercial development, such as a Wal-Mart Supercenter and the 40-acre Catawba Springs Promenade, which has a Lowe's Home Improvement, retail and office space, along with plans for significant residential development. If you are looking for a houses in Denver NC than you have chosen the right town to invest in real estate. Other new Denver attractions include Chillfire Bar and Grill, a sleek new steak and seafood restaurant from the same team that runs the popular Epic Chophouse in Mooresville.

Taking advantage of the area’s natural beauty, there are some great outdoor destinations in Denver as well, including Beatty's Ford Park, which boasts a picnic shelter, disc golf course, walking trails, volleyball court, horseshoe pits, a splash park area, playgrounds, and an amphitheater. There’s also East Lincoln Community Center and Park, which has softball fields, horseshoe pits and a picnic shelter; the Community Center features a gymnasium and hosts various community programs and athletic events.

And golfing enthusiasts are sure to enjoy Cowan's Ford Golf Club, one of the top private, member-owned courses in the Lake Norman area. It has a 40,000-square-foot practice area with a chipping green, practice tee and bunkers. Members have access to an expansive clubhouse with a bar, lounge, restaurant, Olympic-size swimming pool, and tennis courts. Denver also hosts several special events each year, including Denver Days, one of Lake Norman’s most popular festivals, with live music, amusement rides, kids’ activities, and local food vendors. As a way to celebrate its history, Denver also hosts the annual Rock Spring Camp Meeting, which has been taking place for more than 200 years. Every August multiple generations return to a collection of rustic wooden structures that date back to 1790s to enjoy a wholesome religious revival of worship, singing, and socializing.

Denver also has the benefit of being in a county that puts a premium on education. There are more than 25 schools in Lincoln County, including a number of elementary, middle schools, and high schools in Denver. And Lincoln Charter School also has a Denver campus (K-12), which maintains high academic standards with college-prep courses, an active sports program, and many after-school programs.

As Denver continues to grow and change, the area’s burgeoning business community is helping pave the way for the town’s economic future. Agencies such as the Lincoln Economic Development Association are helping attract industrial, office, and commercial development to the county through public-private partnerships. And thanks to the area’s strategic Mid-Atlantic location, nearby interstates, Charlotte-Douglas International Airport, strong work force, and incentives, many companies have already made the Denver region home and created jobs in the process. These include AptarGroup, United Plate Glass, Sabo USA, The Timken Company, RSI Holding Corp., and LeeBoy.
