Clay County NC Homes for Sale

Clay county refers to itself as "the best best kept secret in all of North Carolina" and for good reason. Clay is situated on the North Carolina border with Georgia in the far western part of the state. On top of the countys remote location, its is also home to only just over 10,000 residents making it one of the smallest counties by population in all of North Carolina. This lack of people is largely due to much of the county being comprised of the huge Nantahala National Forest.

The Nantahala National Forest is made up of 531,148 acres of the blue ridge mountain range. Nantahala is the largest national forest in all of North Carolina and is split up into three main districts: Cheoah, Tusquitee, and Nantahala. The name "Nantahala" actually is an old Cherokee Indian word that means "land of the noon day sun", an accurate name as the sun only reaches the main valley of the park at high noon. The park was established all of the way back in 1920 as part of the Weeks Act. Within the park there are over 600 miles of trails for hikers, mountain bikers, ATV's, and horse riding. When in Clay county the Nantahala is a cant miss attraction for anyone with even an acute appreciation for the outdoors.

The only incorporated town within the entire remote county is the charming small town of Hayesville, NC. Hayesville itself only plays home to 311 residents, which just serves as a further testament to how disbursed the 10,000 residents of Clay county actually are. Hayesville actually sits on the site of an old Cherokee town of Quanassee, and the town is currently named after George Hayes. George Hayes was actually the one who established Clay county as its own county, introducing legislation that split Cherokee and Clay counties.

Clay county is one of the most remote counties in North Carolina if not all of the Southeastern United States. With only 10,000 residents scattered throughout 221 square miles, your own personal space is not hard to come by. Clay county is the perfect housing destination for those looking to escape suburbia and escape to somewhere where life is simpler and the nature is untouched.
